It is the story describes a man, Newland, who was born in one of well-known family in New York City and his mentality of painful struggle for falling in love with his fiancée’s cousin Ellen. When Newland is preparing to announce the betrothal with May; Ellen who married to a Count in Europe returns to New York for divorce at the same time. Because of her courage to strive for the personal freedom, the unique taste of artistic and her elegant demeanor, Newland is attracted by her deeply. For Newland, Ellen’s going on her own way is just like a mirror to illuminate the New Yorker how they live in a hypocritical shackle. Because Newland has engagement to May, he cannot allow loving Ellen who has not already divorced. After going through the earthly weathered life, Ellen fells in love with Newland. However, Ellen does not want to hurt May. Although she loves Newland so deep, she still tries to evade Newland. Finally, Newland is ready to tell May he loves Ellen, but Ellen chooses to give up the thought of staying in America and she also gives up her love to Newland. In my opinion, although Ellen cannot stay with her lover, she will not regret to meet and fell in love with Newland. After reading this story, I also think the question, if I am Ellen, what would I do, to give up or to overcome all the things to strive for love with Newland? (247)
