Reflections on an Online Article

As the saying goes that the water that bears the boat is the same that swallows it up. The words I want to say are that typhoon can help us while it also can bring us a major catastrophe. When it is drought, we hope typhoon brings us a little rain to solve the dry problem. However, things does not always turn out the way we think they will. Sometimes, the typhoon is so strong that it leads to the disaster. Therefore, everything has its two sides: good and bad sides.

Recently, we could read several news about Philippines on BBC News. Philippines was struck by two typhoons in matter of days. They were Nesat and Nalgae. The first one, Nesat, killed at least thirty-nine people and caused destruction in the Philippines. Nevertheless, that was not the worst situation to Philippines because the second typhoon, Nalgae, battered northern areas with ferocious winds and heavy rain. A lot of religions were still submerged by the earlier storm Nesat. The storm, Nalgae, tracked roughly the same path as typhoon Nesat. Hence, typhoons Nesat and Nalgae have brought a double dose of rain and floods. Who could image that two typhoons lashed the same religions just in a few days? I think the residents in Philippines were astonished by this event. It was Philippines that suffered frequent typhoons about twenty a year.

Reading the news about Philippines made me remind the typhoon Morakot in 2009. It was the most serious flood after typhoon Ellen in 1959. There was a interesting thing that when the typhoon Ellen was fifty anniversary, the typhoon Morakot happened. Although typhoon Morakot stayed in Taiwan four days, from Aug. sixth to Aug. tenth, it brought a huge damage to our lives and property. Especially in south of Taiwan, the destruction was the worst. For example, due to a landslide, the Xiaolin village was missing. Most residents of Xiaolin were buried by a massive mudslide that destroyed most of the town. There were only fewer people relieved. To those people who were relived, how were their feelings that when they knew their family were dead, only themselves were still alive? It was so miserable and wretched. The other example was Jinshuai Hotel in Taitung. Because the foundation of Jinshuai Hotel was hollowed by the flood, the hotel fell down in Ten seconds. Watching this scene on TV, I couldn’t forget that forever. Even though I was not in the site, it seemed happening before my sight. It really shocked me.

No matter where the typhoon is , Taiwan or Philippines or anywhere , the most important thing is that people in the same country should unite and help each other. When the typhoon Morakot happened, the artists and stars all stood out to raise money. That is not an easy problem that only government can deal with. It should all people and the government unite together to overcome because our purpose is the same: recover from the disaster and go out of the shadows. God blesses us and the whole world.
