Trans Fats

Do you believe that cookies, fried chicken and French fries can kill you? Surprisingly, the answer is yes if these foods are made with trans fats. Most trans fats are man-made, using a process that makes this type of fat ideal for deep-frying and baking. However, there is nothing healthy about it. Trans fats can clog arteries, cause heart attacks and lead to excessive weight. In the 1990s, people became more aware of the health risks of trans fats after studies were done. One person who fought against the use of them was Joseph, a lawyer whose stepfather had died of a heart attack. His stepfather had switched to eating margarine instead of butter, as many people believed margarine to be healthier. Today, companies, cities, and even countries are banning trans fats. In New York city, using trans fat for cooking in any of the city’s restaurant is against the law, and it is seriously limited in foods in Denmark. Companies such as McDonald’s and Kentucky, fried chicken have also come on board and are removing trans fats from their menu throughout the world. It is one big step in a healthy direction.(193)
