Is It Essential to Go to College

Few years ago, people always said that once you graduate from college, you become one of the unemployed. Maybe the effect of the bad economy, some of my friends do not go to college and others of them had gone to work after they graduated from high school. Last year, I joined a class reunion which was held by my junior high classmates and I found many of them have gone to work for many years. Although their educational backgrounds are low, they work hard and live a contended life. It can be seen that people who has high educational background doesn’t mean he or she is a more successful person. I think it is not necessary to go to college for three reasons.
First, some college students do not have broad and profound knowledge only get blank diplomas. Because of the high rate of college enrollment in Taiwan, the quality of college students is not as high as the college students’ before. Besides, some people get their college diplomas by paying a big amount of money to college superiors. I think the reason why so many enterprises choose to recruit talents from other companies and do not choose graduated college students is because they have been regarded as a group of unreliable people.
Second, some college students spend their time on unnecessary things. They do not care whether they choose the right department or not, only can they graduate from college, they will be contented. Because the lack of goals in their life, they lose the motive and the enthusiasm to study well in college. They waste their time on working part-times, buying brand name clothes, seeing movies, and eating something good. They only live a carpe diem life and do not have a long-term plan.
Finally, some courses in college are too abstruse to practice in works. Except college students who decide to go to graduate school to have an academic research will get help from those courses, other students would receive little advantages from them. If college students are not interested in study, I think it would be better for them to go to university to learn a professional skill. To have proficiency in certain areas is easier for students to get a job after they graduate.
Opponents of supporting students to go to college say that students who study national universities are much easier to get jobs than students who study private universities or universities of technology in Taiwan. However, I think it is not exactly right. According to Tung Sen News, in the short list of Taiwan’s financial industry, Tamkang University is the third one which the financial industry’s HR departments prefer to choose.
In conclusion, to go to college is not necessary for everyone. It depends on what goals we want to achieve. If we want to be bakers, bartenders, flight attendants, designers, or etc, we do not have to go to college. We can apply for universities to learn a profession skill, which would not waste our time on the abstruse theories that we would not practice in the future. (517)
