Should teachers take physical punishments?

There are many parents who support not to have any physical punishment because they think that would make students feel scared and hate to go to schools. However, the physical punishment has being for a long time, and I believe it should have its reasons. The physical punishment should be one choice of all punishments. And the physical punishment should tie in with some conceptions such as appropriate and reasonable ways; most important of all, the physical punishment should not make any mental problems to students and even physical problems.

Foremost, when the teachers take the physical punishment, they should think about that if the punishment makes students understand the faults they made, if the punishment makes students feel reasonable, if the punishment makes the students remember not to repeat the same fault. No matter what kind of punishments, the most important thing is to make students understand the right and wrong; in other words, the purpose of punishment is to cultivate the sense of right and wrong of students. For example, you could punish a student who cheated on the exam for memorizing the textbook and writing from memory. And if a student threw the garbage anywhere, you could punish him/her for cleaning the classroom for making him/her understand how hard the cleaners were.

Second, when teachers want to give students the punishment, they should considerate the degree of the fault students made, and then choice the most reasonable way to punishment them. Teachers should think and choice that the way they punish students carefully and seriously because students may feel unwilling and unacceptable. Once students feel that way, the punishment might make the problems more serious and they might hate not only the teacher but also the school.

Third, before the teacher decided to take the physical punishment to students, teachers should make them know the rules and make them realize why and what they would be punished. And teachers should ensure that students would not be hurt by the punishment. The punishment should not be too cruel to be painful to students. And the punishment should not make students feel afraid of teachers and school. Teachers should not say any word which is sarcastic, dishonorable, and even emotional. These kinds of words would hurt the mental part of students.

Many people would say that physical punishments can destroy students’ not only bodies but also mind; however, the wrong way of pampering would destroy a person’s whole life. As the development of society, many youngsters have done something wrong and said that school never told them that their behavior was wrong. The schools and teachers are the first line of education and cultivation; especially in Taiwan, students stay in school over eight hours a day. Therefore, I thought that teachers should build the good relationship with students and show their care and patience to students.
