Reflection – Service and Learning
What
So far, I have served seven times in Pingdeng elementary school. At the beginning, I was very nervous and thought much. My feeling was also complicated. Before going to Pingdeng elementary school, I was curious about who my little friend was and how my little friend’s personality was. Could I get along with him/her well? Some kinds of questions were around me at that time. Finally, I saw my little friend, Vivian. At the first time we met, she was really shy and quiet. She was also a little afraid of talking to me. I thought that the reason was that I was a stranger to her. After getting along with her several times, she gradually showed her real personality. In fact, Vivian is a naughty child, instead of a quiet child.

So What
We who take part in Service-Learning activity teach different themes in every week and each of us is responsibility for a theme. According to different grade students, we separate them and design different lectures which are different in the number of vocabularies. For example, I was responsibility for teaching colors in the third week. During my teaching, I found some phenomena. If one of them made noise, the others were easy to be influenced and started to distract from the class. Some students were not interested in the class. However, they were very energetic when they played English game. Every time we finished Service-Learning, we had a meeting to discuss today’s problems about the class. Then, we decided that we designed a learning sheet for them to write. The result of learning sheet was effective because I noticed that they were very quiet to write their learning sheet.


Now What
Teaching English in the elementary school is my Service-Learning. I find it really needs patience and enthusiasm. Children are very active and easy to out of control. Especially, I teach first grade students. Therefore, I have to calm them down patiently sometimes. However, I feel annoyed in my mind. Through this situation, I can learn how to control my temper.


During the process, I learn one thing: wearing others shoes. Take an example. Before teaching them, we have to stand their side to think what ways can help them learn English. Hence, We design different lectures for different groups of students. When we teach them , we also prepare some tools to help them memory. No matter what things, we have to wear others shoes and ask ourselves a question: if I were him or her, how is my feeling? We can’t just think ourselves.
