Are We the Prisoners of the Internet?

The Internet shortens the distant within people and makes communication easier. People communicate to one another and get the work done by using MSN, Facebook, or web cameras at the comfort of their homes or offices. As it is considered as good device talking to people without face-to-face contact, I want to bring up three disadvantages of excessive reliance on computers as contacting tools.

The first disadvantage is the social ability. A person who often uses a computer to chat with friends, contact with colleagues, or clients tends to be lack of ability socializing in person. They can talk a lot via the computer, but not in front of real human beings. It is terrible as one person can only make friends through the computer. With the advancement of the Internet, it provides a lot of conveniences, but also makes us lose our skills gradually.

Next disadvantage is laziness. Colleagues discuss business by using MSN even if they just sit next to each other. Friends don’t hang out often when they can be easily reached through Facebook. These will cause laziness. People would rather stay at home facing computer screens instead of the face-to-face contact.I feel like going shopping with friends, but it is troublesome as I think of changing clothes, doing the make-up, or the long commuting distance. Then, I will change my mind. It is comfortable being at home. This attitude is quite familiar to the people nowadays. The other example is shopping online. Now you can buy anything on the Internet. It is irony that the Internet enables a person to survive without walking out of the house.

The last disadvantage is lies. Virtual world offers a medium for a person to create a brand new and ideal person who he or she isn’t in the reality. Due to two traits mentioned above, this kind of people usually has trouble getting along well with other people. The failure makes them escape from the real world. They turn to the Internet that is a platform to design an unreal socializing person with outstanding appearance.

Most people say that they are busy. The Internet maintains the friendship when their schedule is occupied. People are social animal. Face-to-face contact means a lot to us. It is crucial but most of us don’t realize the harm as technology has been improving. I am sure people always miss the time when they receive written Christmas cards or Birthdays cards. This warms our hearts more than getting E-cards. If a written card touches my heart, I believe that a relationship should be built base on the real touch.

The Internet helps the job done quickly and our life easily, but we actually don’t get more free time as it should have brought us and been designed for. “I don’t have time.” “I am very busy.” They are common excuses in this generation. This teaches us not to overly rely on its convenience. Why not grabbing the phone receiver? Call some friends and make an arrangement for an outing. (508)
