The greatest fighter pilot of World War II in my mind is definitely Erich Hartmann. Not only does he create the highest score of aerial victories, but also how his personality was so fascinating. Although he was not like his best friend, Gerhard Barkhorn, who has the second highest score in the world, he did not take a complete training for being a soldier. But who can think this man become one of most famous aces of Luftwaffe. Compared with his nicknamed “Bubi” which means “little boy” in German, the other ones “The Black Devil of South” expressed how his Soviet enemies was scared him. When they saw the painting in Hartmann’s Bf-109s, they only had one choice, running.
There are too many t things that make me like him, but I just picked two of them to describe. First, He changed his Bf-109s between his wingman. The reason why he did this is that he couldn’t do anything because his enemies all escaped when they saw his painting on his pilot. After he did that, he got the chances for fighting. But I think the other reason is that he wanted to protect his wingman. In fact, he really didn’t let his wingman die in the war.
Second, he and his three friends, Barkhorn, Krupinski, Wiese drank all night before the day they were honored with the Swords and the Oak Leaves. He forgot to take his hat for this ceremony, so he took a hat from the stand and then he said it was too big! However, the owner of the hat is Adolf Hitler. When he heard this, he used telling a joke but actually praising Hitler to avoid the conflict. And the other thing when he was awarded the Diamonds to the Knight's Cross, he was ordered to surrender his gun. But our ace just refused and said that if Hitler could not trust his officers, he would reject to accept the Diamonds. Therefore, we can find Hartmann’s personality. He was smart and brave. He had a clearly belief to himself. But that’s the reason why he promoted so late than other aces.
If there was not Erich Hartmann in WWII, we can’t have so many exciting stories now. Maybe some of you only think about what German did in WWII. We really should not forget the tragic after wars, but I think sometimes it leaves some legend for us.
