Reflection – Service and Learning (II)

During the ServiceLearning course-, what is my happiest and most frustrated
experience? What is my difficulty and achievement? What is my most
    unforgettable memory?

During Service-Learning, seeing little students’ smiles and getting along with them are
my happiest experiences. They are really innocent and cute. Getting along with them, I
felt extremely comfortable and relaxed. I do not have to guess what their mind is
because it has reflected on their faces. Therefore, I can know their feeling and emotion
easily. They also always have a beautiful and shinning smile on their faces any time.
This makes me feel staying in the heaven because they look like angels.

I felt to control them well in the class. That’s my frustrating experience. Children are
always full of energy. If one of them started to make noise, the other children would do
the same thing. At this time, I would feel annoyed. Even though I told them to be quiet,
they just calmed down for a second, and then they started to make noise again.

We design our English course like these. We separate two different grade students into
two different groups to teach them English. After learning, they have a learning sheet to
practice and write. Then, we play a game together to review what they learned today.
When Vivian, who is my student, answered the question during the class, I would be
very happy. The reason was that she paid attention to the class. If Vivian answered the
correct answer during playing game, I would be very proud. These two situations make
me feel a sense of achievement because it means that Vivian learns very well.

After teaching two different topics, we have a big game to review what they learned in
the past two weeks. I remember that we once designed a game in the field. Because of
Easter, we decided to let them look for balls which were hidden in the field. We
separated them into two teams and each them had to find out five balls. Before looking
for each ball, they had to answer questions which is about what they learned in the past
weeks. During the game, every student were very happy and enjoyed the game. After
the game, students’ faces were like red apple. In the end, we also prepared eggs for
everyone to eat. Because of running the whole field with them, I was so exhausted.
However, I had a good time!

What do I learn from the Service-Learning course?
My service-learning is in a school to teach students English. Through them, I see
previous myself and I know more myself now. Many years ago, I also liked theses
innocent, nature and freedom children. They reflected on everything directly without
any hidden emotion. As I grew up, many things made me confine myself. Especially,
before doing one thing, I must consider many things. Then, I hesitated and could not
make decision. I knew that I had this kind of personality. Hence, I learn to make
    decisions bravely now.

Another thing I find myself is that I do not have enough patience. I know that children
sometimes are irrational. Even though I told them not to do so, they still kept doing.
However, I could not blame them so seriously. Therefore, I felt annoyed in my mind and I
was also afraid that I could not stand it anymore. Gradually, I found that I could control
my temper well and my patience also increased. I think it is trained by children and it is a
good news for me , too.

Do you think what the concept of Service-Learning is? Through this semester, is
it different from what you thought before? Why do we need a Service-Learning
course? What is your reflection on Service-Learning?
At the beginning, my concept of service-learning is that some volunteers go to do some
service. Nevertheless, after doing service-learning, I understand my concept is
WRONG. The purpose of service-learning is that people can learn something from
service. In fact, by service-learning, I learn some things: knowing myself and watching
things from different sides. Because I did this activity, I could understand the meaning of
this course and have a physical experience.

I have many things to do and I have to spent my rest time to do this. In order to have a
perfect English class, we who take part in service-learning course have to spent time on
discussing our teaching and making material to increase their learning interest.
Therefore, I feel tired in this activity. Each thing has bad and good sides, so I look the
bright side to make me enjoy this activity. Actually, getting along with children pleases
me. It is worth to do and I have a good memory with children.
