My English learning styles and strategies

I’ve learned English for more than 10 years, and I’m very interested in it. So I choose English to be my target language. Talk about my style preferences in learning English, I like to learn English in a pleasant environment, like entertainment. So I watch a lot of movies and listen to western music. When watching a movie, try to listen to their conversations. I manage to see them without the captions so that I can try to understand the conversations. After that, I check the captions to revise myself. Listen to western music is the same method as watching a movie. Do not see the lyrics when listen to the music. Try to identify the vocabularies and practice the listening. I can practice my pronunciation at the same time. For grammar, I prefer to read popular English magazines and some novels that I am interested in. By reading more, I can improve my grammar and sentence structure. Through repeating every single sentence that the characters said when I watch a movie or read, I can both enhance my listening and speaking abilities. I can do as much as I can. Accordingly, when I see the same episode next time, I change the former incomprehensible input into comprehensible one. These are the strategies that are useful for me to learn English in a more efficient way. In a non-threatened style to learn English is helpful for me to raise interests in it.

In learning English or other foreign languages, students in Taiwan usually do not have good learning environment. In addition, under such an examination-oriented education system, students in Taiwan study only for tests. For those who perform well academically, maybe getting high score in English is a piece of cake. However, most of them have difficulty communicating with foreigners due to shyness.

  1. I also think that watching movies is a good way for learning English. It is especially useful when you focus on the language.
