[ESL] Foreign Language Learning Experiences

I’m now learning English as my first foreign language, and Japanese as my second foreign language. When I was eight years old, my father made me learning English as my second language. After I go to junior high school, I started to learn Japanese. I like to them foreign language not only because I can use it to know many new things that written or said in foreign languages, but also because I can always get something interesting between my mother language and foreign language.

In the classroom, I’m a quiet student and get embarrassed easily when I make mistake. In this case, I always look to teacher for everything I need to be successful. Outside of classroom, I like to work alone than with other people because I feel annoyed if other people cannot agree with my working style and learning strategies. In addition, I like to analyze the details of language and understand exactly what is said or written, but it does not mean that I do not like to “guess” when I am reading an article with new vocabularies in it. Also, I enjoy in finding ways to continue learning language outside of the classroom. For example, I set my browser with Yahoo! and Yahoo! Japan to be my first page; so that I can read news or know something interesting both in English and Japanese every day. Also another example, when I go traveling, I always take the free guide paper. If they have foreign language versions, I always take others that is written in English or Japanese. For one thing, it can also be one special material to learn foreign language, for another, when my foreign friends come to Taiwan, I can introduce them those tour sites with foreign language and the knowledge I get from the guide paper.

I will not say that learning foreign language is an easy thing, but I will say that it is a great thing to me. I made some Japanese friends this summer. At begging, they did not beware that I am a foreigner, I ask them why, they said because I could easily follow up what they are talking about! I realized immediately maybe it was because I always check the news at Yahoo! Japan; so I think maybe everyone can start to find some ways outside of classroom to learn foreign language.
