Is Video Gaming Good for You?

Our parents keep telling us that playing video games are bad and can cause serious harm to our eyes and to our brain.  I remember my parents used to go as far as saying playing video games will kill brain cells at a rapid pace and make me dumber.  There are also other arguments that video games can implant violent scenes into the young which would make it hard for some minors to differentiate between fantasy and reality.  However, there are also people who argue that video games bring more good than harm.  While there is no denying the fact that video games can cause serious harm to our eyes especially during long gaming sessions, short gaming sessions may cause little hazardous effect to our eyes while have a tremendous effect in improving our brain activities.  This article talks about the advantages of playing video games.  In fact, according to this article, video gaming improves creativity, decision making and perception.  Precise advantages include the improvement of hand-eye coordination as well as increased vision capabilities during the darkness.  In fact, study shows that people who play video games can make decisions 25% faster without sacrificing accuracy.  Also, playing video games is a great resource to reduce depression.  Because video game takes a lot of concentration, it will take a lot of stress off from real world situations, thus reducing the depression level.  There has been a trend of overweight people associated with being gamers.  As a result, we must ask ourselves the question on whether or not the positive aspects of playing video games outweigh the negative aspects.  While there are definitely benefits to playing video games, it is obvious that playing long hours without resting is a bad idea.  Playing video games do bring out benefits.  However, being too attached to video games may bring more harm than good.  The best method to exploit the benefits of playing video games without causing too much harm may be to play video games at smaller intervals.  By controlling the amount of video games played, one may still be able to increase brain activities while reduce the chances of having health issues associated with playing video games such as obesity.
